3. 30 pence at 1.6m/1 odds – won £500,000
The season of 2000/2001 was excellent for Manchester UTD. The team grabbed their third consecutive Barclays Premier League title. The boys in red weren’t quite so lucky during the Champions League as Germany’s top boys Bayern Munich knocked them out at the quarter finals stage. However, times weren’t so hard for one lucky UTD fan.
The anonymous fan had placed a mass event accumulator just before the season of 2000 kicked off. With a bet of only 30p, the punter didn’t have a lot of faith in the jackpot coming in, yet with odds of around 1.6 million to 1 not much was needed to generate one of the largest football payouts in history.
Having predicted the victors of the English Leagues, Scottish Leagues the Rugby Union champions & cricket county championship winners. The ball was quite literally in Bayern Munich’s court. If Bayern Munich won…The huge prize was the Englishman’s for the taking. With the game going to penalties, it was one of few times that an Englishman was happy to see the Germans scoring from the spot.
2. 80 pence at 683k/1 odds – won £585,000
Another lucky winner had stuck to one golden rule in his betting strategy. Never place a bet of more than £1 each time. All it took was one moment of luck for it all to pay off.
The footy lover from Malta, had placed a huge 20 match accumulator using the Betfred website. The final was to be played between Premier league sides Chelsea & Liverpool. That weekend in 2011 had gone very much as expected with the competitions favourites winning the majority of games played.
With Chelsea being on form, Liverpool didn’t look greatly optimistic going into the match. Liverpool scored midway through the first half, before Sturridge scored a howler to equalize just after the half time break. The game seemed to be heading for a draw, until former England defender Johnson popped up with 2 minutes left to play to score what proved to be a whopping £585,000 goal.
1. £100 on 6542/1 odds – won £650,000
To predict 8 match outcomes accurately is impressive, but predicting 8 results while the games are underway takes betting to a whole new level. Most people would call it stupidity but it takes some balls to splash out over £100 on teams that are already losing, but for one lucky footy fan it definitely paid off as he took home the biggest payout in football history!
The accumulator consisted of 8 games which all had around 20 minutes left of play time. Many of the results were going against his initial picks… A draw for west ham while they were already 2-0 down. Charlton Athletic to draw with Sheffield Wednesday in a game that they were losing & same for Coventry in their match against Leyton Orient.
Having predicted a draw for Fulham & Wigan, Wigan went ahead with just 8 minutes remaining & with an extra man on the field, they appeared likely to secure the victory – until Fulham levelled from the spot with just 2 minutes to play.
After multiple plot twists, it seemed as if Coventry City, who were 2-1 down against Leyton Orient might be the side to let the punter down – until Jim O’Brien finessed in the added time goal to confirm the draw and earn one lucky football fan an unbelievable £650,000 – not a bad return for just 20 nerve-wracking minutes.
